'Talk' was is an interactive experience exploring questions of our existence and our search for life beyond Earth. It is a narrative built around two civilizations trying to find intelligent life beyond their planet. One a highly scientific society and the second a religious civilization, both limited by their lack of understanding of their counterpart.

This project explores fundamental questions of our existence and place in the universe, the disorientation that is in our communication with each other, and our search for life beyond Earth.

A pair of devices that communicate with each other, but both having a different input and output (example, the sound from one device will be translated to a visual in the other room and vice versa). These devices were placed in a dark room, split into half and the users could enter from either  sides and try to communicate. The idea came from us being alone in the universe, even if we could find other civilizations, we might be too different and too far to ever make contact with them.

It is the human nature of curiosity that has led us from trees to houses to dominating our planet. The scientific significance of finding life would be tremendous. We would have better knowledge of what life is and what it could be. The scientific method might shift, also motivate the whole world to participate in becoming a multiplanetary civilization.

Finding life will not only have a scientific shift but a theological and philosophical one as well. For example, when we ask, “What is life?” are we asking a scientific question or a theological one? Questions about life’s origin and its future are complicated, and must be explored holistically, across disciplines. Perhaps life beyond earth will give us a new way of thinking about god and our place in this universe.

One of the civilizations believe the search for life outside of their planet is deeply important to their knowledge. It is their nature of curiosity that led them from trees to houses to dominating their planet. And for the same reason, they have developed this observatory, calling out to the cosmos, hoping that someone is listening. The device is used to send its planetary location into outer space hoping that the message can be interpreted by whoever is listening.

In another center of the cosmos another civilization is asking the same question. However, they believe this search for life beyond, is more of a religious question than a scientific one. Their religion has always believed God named the stars. Was it really a stretch to believe God named the inhabitants too. Their science tells them that the universal language is frequencies, even if the language they speak is different from the way they speak.

✧ Based on Symphony of the spheres, an ancient philosophical concept that regards proportions in the movement of celestial bodies as a form of music. The ‘music’ is not necessarily thought to be audible, but a harmonic mathematical concept. The Scientific study has tried to describe this as orbital resonance.
